History: the relationship between Christianity and democracy

Monday, August 9, 2010

I really enjoyed reading this article .

The irony is that they (churches / Christian denominations) "support" democracy in the few times that suit them, as the issue of gay marriage in California. For those who do not know the story, there was a referendum (at the same time of the last presidential elections in 2008) to ban gay marriage in that state, and after a campaign of lies well funded by the Catholic Church and the Mormons of Utah, ban won with 52% of the vote ... for now a federal judge to determine (and well) that the ban is 100% unconstitutional, is to take a majority to a minority rights, and that most have never properly explained how the ban serves the public good - creating slogans like "Protect Marriage", but when - in open court - the judge asks them what is that marriage is to be protected, can not answer. But with all this, are now complaining that "the people's will" is not being respected, that the judge is "undemocratic" and the like.

What supreme hypocrisy, considering (see initial link) as they tried to "democracy" throughout history ...

Day to draw Muhammad

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Today is the day to draw Muhammad (link below right now and do not know if it will be too much for access, or because the service is hosting Cows), which also has a Facebook group . So here's my entry, made in minutes in Gimp :

Mohammed

(If I disappear in the near future, you know what it was. :) )

My goal with this is not to offend anyone, although I imagine this happening, you would only tell certain elements of a certain religion that they can not silence the world with cowardly threats of violence. In non-Medieval, freedom of expression is infinitely more important than the "right" (which does not exist) people do not hear or see anything that offends. Because, if we are out there, I was also offended - deeply - the atrocities that certain members of the "religion of peace" they say, and above all do. But would I do that all they did was hurt me me and others ...

If you want more examples to draw Muhammad Day, see the Planet Atheism today (May 20), or if you have already spent some time sailing there till this day. Is there some excellent, both in terms of art (which obviously does not happen with mine) and in terms of message.

I also suggest the Mohammed Image Archive , which has pictures of all kinds - including paintings made during the life of that. And be sure to see the email that this site has received ...

Atheists: the most hated minority in the U.S.

Friday, February 26, 2010

The Atheist - Godless Atheists Threaten Christian civilization Who lives in countries mainly composed of believers "not practicing" as is the case of Portugal, probably does not make any idea what happens in a certain country, it is not Iran, Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan, but the United States of America. A supposedly secular nation, which, unlike most European countries (all?), Religion is not even official, state ... and yet, religion - mostly Protestant Christians, but there is everything - is the highest among countries of "1st world", and survey after survey continues to show that atheists - about 10% of the country - are the most hated minority, the more considered "anti-American" and no longer considered reliable. A candidate (admittedly) atheist to hold any political office is virtually ineligible, and atheists are discriminated against at school, at work and in their own neighborhoods - sometimes reaching vandalism and physical violence.

But do not go by what I say (after all, never been there, although read daily blogs and news from there), so will Mike Clawson ( blog ), a Christian (liberal, those who do not say that God hates gays and that all non-Christians will be tortured eternally after death, but Christian in it), wrote a thesis (link to Google Docs) that made for his seminar on the status of atheists in America. They are about 20 pages but the text is in bold relatively large and well spaced, so it is easily read in less than 5 minutes.

Seriously, it's worth.

Then think if you will, a little about the legitimacy to discriminate, ostracize, demonize, insult and abuse constantly - sometimes up to violence - a significant proportion of people simply do not have the same beliefs as them. And also think about what this says about the "higher" Christian morality.

The fact that he was a Christian to write it, and have done so after talking with atheists blog Friendly Atheist (typically, this is not - as he says in the text, believers say - even on TV - unpunished atrocities on atheists without having even one of those present to respond), it is nevertheless a refreshing relief: Christians can overcome their prejudices - and much of the "morality" of the Bible, too. It is a principle ...

Fish, atheism and intolerance

Friday, February 12, 2010

This is an Ichthys , more commonly known in the U.S. for "Jesus Fish", relatively common in Portuguese car (I noticed a still to come to work):

Jesus Fish

(There are variants of it that do not include the word "Jesus", totally "hollow", or that include other words such as "Truth.")

And this is a "Darwin Fish", obviously a parody of the former (notice the feet of the fish reference to the evolution of species):

Darwin Fish

The latter is usually exclusive to the U.S., since there is much religion associated with creationism, the idea that the Genesis of the Bible should be interpreted literally, and so the Darwinian evolution of species is false, because the animals were all created there are 6000 years as they are, mankind began with Adam and Eve, there was even a worldwide flood, and other drivel whose falsehood is proved by more than geology, biology, history, etc. ..

Anyway, like the first one can be associated with Christianity "active" (after all, the person is communicating to the world his belief - and note that I do not see any harm in it by itself), the second can probably be associated with atheism.

Now put the question: which of the two, dressed in a car, most likely implies - means any odds - the car being vandalized because of it?

I think the answer is obvious.

As already discussed in previous posts, any atheist activism, for "light" that is - even if it is simply saying "I'm an atheist," without shame in doing it - upsets people in a way that is not visible in any other field.

No atheist or believer of any other religion (except maybe a Muslim theocracy) will ever vandalizing the car of a Christian who has the sticker from the fish. Just as no fan of Microsoft will scratch the glass or from a car with a sticker of an apple (which is more a religion for Apple fans than Christianity for many "non-practicing Catholics" ... :) ). But "I'm an atheist" disturbing. Perturbed by other atheists, for some reason.

Comments?

PS - could also ask what this says about the morality of both sides ...

Abortion: Revenge Part II

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

(Hey, I've seen worse titles!)

Note: The following is adapted and expanded a little comment I made in a blog of Mario Lopez . Much of what follows has been said in other posts recently here, but not exactly in these words ... and not everything is repeated.

Also, try to answer finally the question of Samuel: "What is a human being? When does a fetus become a human being? ", Although the post-comment-turned, in general, was not written to answer this question, but that the post of Mario Lopez. Hence it is expanded, and not copied. :)

Without Further ado ...

More abortion ... now, other opinions

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

For my part, I do not think I will add more to the issue. I've been insulted to have my opinion, to have thought of it, and be sure of it, when today is considered "arrogant" to have an OPINION based on strong thought; only accepts a strong opinion based on emotions. Or authority, or religion, or ... Bah.

Anyway, if anyone wants to comment on my previous posts, and for a change, want to respond to what I wrote (instead of just saying "I am very aggressive") as will be appreciated.

In this post, I will just mention what others have said (outside this blog) on this issue.

First, post a girlfriend named The voluntary interruption of pregnancy ... . It's a bit more detailed than mine, and I think it shows well the two sides of the issue. Go, read and comment. :) Includes arguments like this:

For those unaware, until 10 weeks many women do not have a confirmed pregnancy and have a miscarriage without knowing they were pregnant. The body itself is in charge of "cast" fetuses with severe problems, is part of "natural selection" Darwin, the non-survival of the weak, unviable.

Thus, according to the morality of "no's" (which confuse a human with a cluster of cells is a potential human being), almost all women with sexual life are "mass murderers" and not know it ...

Then I want to show a post I think is totally ridiculous. It comes from an American party, "America First Party" which is basically more Republican than the Republicans. The post is called ... wait for it ... Abortion Leads to Nuclear War . Yes, it seems that Mother Teresa (which may have been many things, but it was not, of course, an intelligent person or culture - or so it was very deceitful, for surely great nonsense saying) said something like that, and the fanatics from around the world take it. So, you know - do not want to see huge mushrooms on the horizon, do not abort. Oh, and ...

It is abhorrent That abortion supporters choose to hide behind the term 'choice' to mask Destroying Their goal of unborn children and immoral behavior without Promoting Responsibility

Destroying children! What a horror! What kind of cruel and inhuman monster would want to ever do such a heinous act? : Shock:

Of course, things are not so. I suggest you leave this alternative ... to be irrational and distorted a cluster of emotions, and be human: think a little. Like this post in response to the earlier statement, he says,

Nuclear bombs have Been used once in war, and I seriously doubt the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki HAD to anything with the abortion, Considering It Was not legally in the U.S. in 1945.

And in response to the idiocy of "destroying children" quoted above,

Let me tell you right now, no one Wants to destroy children. It's Just That Sometimes an abortion is the only option to have the mother keep May from ruining her life or the lives of her future children. Life is not always simple or fair. That's the way it is. I Wish We Could all live in a dream world of magic, but we do not, and Trying to legislate it into reality will not make it so.

It would not have said it better.
