'" Of course, Dawkins did not say such a thing (which gives the idea that the British biologist will be at the airport waiting for Benedict XVI with a pair of handcuffs ...), what he did, along with Christopher Hitchens, a motion was to support existing (which was being ignored by the "media", shamefully, to be supported by two celebrities) to launch a lawsuit against the Pope, for his role in covering up well-documented cases of rape and torture of children, and protection of authors these cases (since for him the only thing that matters is the reputation of the Church).
Even if the process runs (and I hope this happens), there is some possibility that the Pope be arrested? Of course not. Not think there's any chance he came to be tried or even questioned on this issue by a secular court, even if he is being accused of something.
The best one can expect this - and I hope it reaches such a - is as follows: Pope gets away, but this does not happen because there is a legal case against him. It happens, yes, he is effectively above the law in this case British law. And this should not go unnoticed. Nor is "only" the fact that the abuse of children by priests is part of the more deplorable because it is done by someone in a position of authority and trust in these children - and an abuse of authority and a complete betrayal of that trust.
No, the truly criminal part, and condemns the whole Church hierarchy, including the current pope, even members of the hierarchy who have never touched a child, is this: they try to cover it up for decades. The Catholic hierarchy has been aware of numerous cases of child abuse by priests part of the world, and their only concern has been the same self-protect themselves. Protecting your reputation. Not the protection of children. Not getting justice.
In many cases for decades, having to choose between the protection of innocent children and the protection of the reputation of the Church, that he always chose the latter. Whenever there are complaints against a priest, the complaints do not reach the police, nor the priest is expelled from the Church, it is simply transferred to another parish, where he will be new children innocently entrusted to violate.
