The question statement is offensive for several reasons, and perhaps did not deserve an answer. But, as I did before, I'll be generous and assume you do not really believe in what you just said, and that you are simply repeating something without thinking that you were told. And honestly, if I were you away from me who told you this thing, because it is not, of course, an honest and reliable, but on the contrary, has no trouble lying and slandering their advantage. And develop a bit of critical thinking, to not believe everything you hear or think without question, nor did you any harm.
I have said before, this FAQ, that fear of punishment or desire for reward are bad reasons to be moral (and suggests nothing nice things about those who think these are valid reasons), and that our morality comes from religion is not , quite the contrary . But in this entry I will answer the implication itself.
This implication is this: that atheists in the background "know" that God exists, but choose to "pretend not to believe him" not to have to accept a higher being, obey the rules of morality, etc...
There is so much stupidity and malice that implication that a person does not know where to start.
First, it is suggested that atheists are dishonest, since it is implied that the existence of God is self-evident and obvious to all, and therefore atheists are lying when they say they got atheism for lack of evidence to support the claims of believers. The indictment suggests that atheists at heart "know" that God exists (and is always the god who believes the accuser, of course, and no other), but pretend not to know, that is, deep down are not actually atheists.
Second, it is suggested that atheists are immoral, since "choose" atheism for not having to listen to anyone, have rules of morality, etc.. And not to "have" no one above them.
Third, it is suggested that atheists are completely stupid, since there is "deep down" "knew" that there is a god who imposes moral rules and punishes those not following, it would make no sense to declare themselves atheists, since that does not deliver them in any way, any of divine punishment.
All this is not only false, is intentionally false (also known as "dishonest") and insulting.
The existence of your god is not obvious (otherwise, among other things, there would be other religions or religious apologists would be needed - as there was in all history, and continue to be - trying to "prove" that God exists).
Atheists do not "choose" to be atheists by any ulterior motives. It does not happen with everyone, but many of us somo because it was the conclusion reached rationally, then we look at the evidence and the world in which we live.
Atheists are as moral or more, on average, than believers of any religion. Especially since we are the only ones who do not do well waiting to win something with it after we die. And the "moral" is chosen, not obeyed; morality can not simply come from obedience to be given, or following certain rules, but the choices of a conscious being.
And atheists are not so dumb that they believe in the existence of some god, but think they can fool pretending not to believe him (!). So if you have found that the statement in the title of this entry made sense, I hope you're feeling quite embarrassed right now.
(Note: please restrict any comment that you make to the previous question and answer, and not to other matters as the existence or nonexistence of God. Thank you.)
